Ode To Newfoundland

Hi All,
Da GrouseLand hits da big time!

Great article on the East Coast Trail. Everything there is true - the cliffs, the Atlantic, the air so crisp it could hurt your lungs if your lungs are not used to purity. The hospitality is great, too - free
accomodations for the Famous Friends!

Found some pics of the places mentioned in the artiles / on the map in the slideshow of pics in the article. All of the shots are about eight years old, back in 2000. The trail has really been developed over the last fifteen years, and would really be a joy to anyone who loves to hike, backpack and tent. The hospitality as you go from town to town on the list is also second to none - a la monde!

First one is yours truly at Cape Spear, most easterly point in North America. The lighthouses mentioned in the article are in the background. Men's Schtaimen pages has an Inukshuk from Cape Spear, if you want to check out more. The day this pic was taken, several whales were hiking with me, fishing for capelin.

The second pic is a typical brook in a wooded area... the serenity of this place is amazing. I call this picture "Toward Heaven."

This is the Pitcher Plant. It is the official plant of our region. It's a nasty bugger. Google "Pitcher Plant" and you'll see...

This picture is cool to me, too. Look at the perseverence of that little tiny bluebell... it's defying the Rock; it WILL grow!

This and the next two pics of the suspension bridge are taken at the trail at La Manche. There used to be a fishing village there, once upon a time.
Beautiful harbour.

Then there's Da Man at "Da Spout". Da Spout is just north of Bay Bulls on the map, and a beautiful hike... along the cliffs for the most part. Brutal to do in one day from Bay Bulls, but that's what I did, solo, on this day. The Spout itself is a natural geyser along the coast... you can see from the shot of three scanned together.

All of these are scanned pics from the analog camera days... hope you all
enjoy them!

(and now, back to Da Grouse!)

Cheers,
East Coast Trail Grouse
