Minke Whale Visits

Hi Men and Da Blog,

The pic of the Osprey reminded me of the boat tour we just did in the Humber Arm, Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, Canada.  The arm is lined with osprey, yet I couldn't get a pic with my little camera on the boat.  Just got back to Fog Land (Torbay) and was able to upload these pictures.  On the boat tour we came across some minke whales chasing capelin for lunch.  To the credit of the boat's captain, he did not chase the whales, and we stayed off in the distance even after finding the whales.  This is the best my little snappy camera can do... you are able to see the dorsal fin cresting the water.  These are not particularly large whales:  between 7-10m long and a few ton at adult.  In Newfoundland we do get the larger humpbacks, but those are on the east coast of the island (along the trails that Jens found in his newspaper this spring).

The last pic is by hometown, Gillams, taken from the water.  My parents' house (where I grew up) is barely visible... in the centre of the pic (left to right) yet not quite in the middle... more towards the bottom. A light pole near the beach seems to point up to it, a grey roof with a huge crimson maple (how Canadian!) obscuring most of the house.

Hope you enjoy these pictures of my little corner of our planet.

Great pictures on the Solar ideas.  We have huge hydroelectric projects here, but as Randy says, once we all plug into the grid more and more, it will be hard to sustain.

Cheers,
