4 speed - made in 1954

Not as shiny as Randy's Ironhorse but much older! Ridgid frame with seatpost suspension, foot clutch and tank shifter. Moved the baby today from the metal shed into a new "apartment". The old shed will be torn down soon and replaced by a much larger metal building.
Prost!

a good day to be in the water #2

White-crowned Sparrow, same spot as below. Wondering why I don't post chicks? Our local queens wouldn't fit on your screen. Did I say they are fatty's?

Edge of the world

Sepp was riding on the top of the world; the cliffs I ride along seem like the edge of the world.  Fall off in the wrong spot here, and it's a long way down into cold, salt water.  The first and last pictures are of my hometown, Torbay (the horses are for Randy et la jeune fille de Jens) while the middle pictures are for a small town called Pouch Cove, pretty much as far east as you can be and still be in North America.

Gotta fly - Great ride in the AM, now the Grouse calls in the PM ... what a fabulous training regimen!

Prost!

My Starfish

I read the starfish story to my six year old, Zoe, last night, and she thought it was wonderful... she loved the picture of the real starfish, too.

Here are my two starfish.  The tide will someday move them away from me, but for now, I am their harbour and lighthouse.

The story also reminded me of being a teacher... supposedly I teach "Chemistry", but the fact is that the science does not matter at all, I simply hang out with a bunch of starfish.  Maybe I'm a fisherman instead of a teacher.

No fog here today... will post some ride pics later.  Great shot of the top of the earth, Sepp!

Cheers,
Murray

StarFish

Yaquina Head, Oregon Coast on a minus tide

Once upon a time there was a wise man that used to go to the ocean to do his writing.

One day he was walking along the shore. As he looked down the beach, he saw a human figure moving like a dancer. He smiled to himself to think of someone who would dance to the day. So he began to walk faster to catch up.

As he got closer, he saw that it was a young man and the young man wasn't dancing, but instead he was reaching down to the shore, picking up something and very gently throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer he called out, "Good morning! What are you doing?"
The young man paused, looked up and replied, "Throwing starfish in the ocean." "I guess I should have asked, why are you throwing starfish in the ocean?" "The sun is up and the tide is going out. And if I don't throw them in they'll die." "But, young man, don't you realize that there are miles and miles of beach and starfish all along it. You can't possibly make a difference!" The young man listened politely. Then bent down, picked another starfish and threw it into the sea, past the breaking waves and said, "It made a difference for that one."

There is something very special in each and every one of us and
we must each find our own starfish. We have all been gifted with the ability to make a difference and if we throw our stars wisely and well -- the world will be changed!

What's even sadder...

... life's a beach, yes, but what can be sadder than dying on some foreign beach sand, in a war you don't believe in, a war that has absolutely no reason for being?

Hopefully countries around the world will wake up and stop following Bush/Cheney and future successors into (oil) pipe-dream wars.  Canuck troops are now in Afghanistan on the US lead... why?

Life's a beach

How much does it take, just ask Cheney and Bush, you sell out your country, bleed it dry and there is still never enough. Hmmmm, did I really say that about those good Christian men. Randy

Life's a beach

Who want's to get rich? Life is a beach. If you are rich life's gonna be a bitch ... Man Randy, I look quite swarthy in this shot. It's not from workin' and getting rich. How much more does it take to qualify for an IslandMan?

Save the Whale recommendation

Schtaiman at Sandy

Hi All-

Here's my Schtaiman at Sandy Lake, NL.  Pics are from two days ago, on our way home from a visit to my parents.  The lake goes for a few hundred km... longest on our island.  Note how I used Men's "straight up" Stoneman... in Canada we usually build a two-legged man Inukshuk after the native arctic Innu / Inuit tradition.  I was surprised how I could keep the stones stacking... even though my dad (not shown) kept giving me a hard time.  The gals in the pick are (left to right) my Fiona (2 years) my sister's Maria (10 years) and my Zoe (6 years).  Zoe thinks all Schtaiman are able to walk, and need walking sticks... so the last Schtaiman and this one have walking sticks, thanks to Zoe.

Cheers,
SchtaiGrouse

PS.  No blow-hole fart whales to save in this lake!  We have standards here in Canuck-land!

SAVE THE WHALE

M&M team work, thanks Murray for your Minke post.
Have a laught my friends and be happy it's not you! Randy complained a while ago about the fatty's in his pool. This pig(c) reminds me of that scene I lucky never got to see.
Happy swimming Randy!
Sepp and Jens, lucky you got no whales over in Europe ... oh, Sepp: do you need a new "Fear-BeerMachine"?

Minke Whale Visits

Hi Men and Da Blog,

The pic of the Osprey reminded me of the boat tour we just did in the Humber Arm, Bay of Islands, Newfoundland, Canada.  The arm is lined with osprey, yet I couldn't get a pic with my little camera on the boat.  Just got back to Fog Land (Torbay) and was able to upload these pictures.  On the boat tour we came across some minke whales chasing capelin for lunch.  To the credit of the boat's captain, he did not chase the whales, and we stayed off in the distance even after finding the whales.  This is the best my little snappy camera can do... you are able to see the dorsal fin cresting the water.  These are not particularly large whales:  between 7-10m long and a few ton at adult.  In Newfoundland we do get the larger humpbacks, but those are on the east coast of the island (along the trails that Jens found in his newspaper this spring).

The last pic is by hometown, Gillams, taken from the water.  My parents' house (where I grew up) is barely visible... in the centre of the pic (left to right) yet not quite in the middle... more towards the bottom. A light pole near the beach seems to point up to it, a grey roof with a huge crimson maple (how Canadian!) obscuring most of the house.

Hope you enjoy these pictures of my little corner of our planet.

Great pictures on the Solar ideas.  We have huge hydroelectric projects here, but as Randy says, once we all plug into the grid more and more, it will be hard to sustain.

Cheers,
NewfieGrouse
